    Henry Meiggs, owner of the US railway company, signed a railway construction agreement with the Costa Rica government in 1871. The railway company begins to build the railway, but the workers start to grow bananas along the railway line due to the desire of the workers to bring their food to lower costs. Only the bananas grown will be such a profitable business that the company buys large lands in Latin America and almost monopolizes the banana trade. This company, which was a power in 1899, is called United Fruit Company. This strong position of the company in the country reaches the situation they can affect even the politics of the country they exist. This effect was so great that at the beginning of the 20th century, they wanted to overthrow the president who wanted high taxes in Honduras.
